MOSCOW, SEPT. 6. Russia and United States revived a Cold war tradition when their teams met for the Russia's Challenge track-and-field meet in Moscow, the first time a one-on-one meet has been held since 1982. Russia prevailed in 11 of 15 events to win by 236 points to 182, but Sunday's match, which was expected to be a rematch of the Olympic track-and-field competition, was overshadowed by the school hostage crisis that ended in southern Russia on Friday with more than 350 people dead, many of them children. In Athens, the United States won eight gold medals, 12 silver and 5 bronze in athletics. Russia finished with 6-7-7.
Hayes at it again
Olympic champion Joanna Hayes of the United States clocked 12.78 seconds to win the women's 100 metres hurdles. The result was .41 second short of her Olympic record. Mariya Koroteyeva of Russia was second in 12.86, and American Jenny Adams third at 13.08. Olympic 800 champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy led the Russian podium sweep clocking 1 minute, 47.72 seconds. Dmitriy Bogdanov came second at 1:48.35; Stanislav Khukharkin was third.
American sweep
Americans Marcus Brunson, Kareem Streete-Thompson and Mardy Scales took over the men's 100 podium. Brunson timed 10.15. Streete-Thompson was .18 second behind. Scales was third at 10.40. Monique Hennagan, a member of the US 4x400 relay champions, won the women's 400 in 50.63 ahead of Russia's Natalya Antyukh and Natalya Nazarova, who clocked 51.57 and 51.80, respectively. Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko of Russia dominated the high jump with a leap of 2 metres. Her teammate Anna Chicherova was second with 1.92. American Amy Acuff, fourth in the Olympics, was third at 1.89. Slesarenko made one attempt to break the world record of 2.09, but gave up after failing on her first attempt at 2.10. ``I was tired and it was too cold to keep on trying,'' Slesarenko said. Other Olympic champions failed to repeat their gold-winning performances at the Summer Games.
