VIRUDHUNAGAR, SEPT.6. The Virudhunagar Bar Association has appealed to the State Government to set up an additional district court here. In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, its president, S.V. Nagarajan, has said Virudhunagar, district headquarters, was centrally located in the district. At present, two judicial magistrate courts, a district munisif court, a sub-court and a fast track court were functioning at the combined court complex here, he said. However, since the fast track court did not have the provision of filing fresh cases, the people from Arupukkottai, Kariapatti, Sattur, Tiruchuzhi and Virudhunagar taluk had to travel all the way to Srivilliputtur, located in the western corner of the district. "Setting up of an additional district court will spare the people from travelling a longer distance," the memorandum said. The Government need not incur establishment expenditure, as it could be accommodated in the existing combined court complex, it said. Besides, the complex had video conferencing facility, which, when made functional, would spare the district police of taking prisoners from the Central Prison in Madurai up to Srivilliputtur and back.
