MUMBAI, SEPT. 6. Allan John Waters, a 56-year-old British national, was extradited from the United States and brought early today to Mumbai, where he is wanted in connection with a case of sexually abusing children registered almost three years ago. A team from the Mumbai police force went to the United States last week to escort Mr. Waters to Mumbai. He was to have been produced in a court today, but by the time formalities were completed it was too late, according to Sub-Inspector Ashok Khedkar, one of the policemen who accompanied him. Mr. Waters is in police custody and will be produced in court on Tuesday. Mr Khedkar said red-corner notices were issued through the Interpol in April 2002 for Mr. Waters as well as for another British national, Duncan Grant, the founder of the `Anchorage' shelters for street children in Colaba in south Mumbai and Murud in Raigad district. Mr. Waters was arrested by the US authorities in July 2003 and was in Brooklyn jail till he was finally extradited, Mr Khedkar said. He was a regular visitor to Anchorage and possibly Mr. Grant's partner. Mr. Waters used to spend 15 days at a time, three to four times in a year in Mumbai and would take children for holidays to places such as Goa. He has been charged with child abuse under Sections 373 and 377 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act and the maximum punishment could be life imprisonment, Mr Khedkar said.
