Manipur agitation to continue

IMPHAL, SEPT. 6. The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL) in Manipur has decided to continue the agitation after the talks with the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, yesterday failed.

The WCAL members, L. Umakanta and N. Boby, said Mr. Patil had little sympathy for the democratic aspirations of the State people and therefore the agitation would continue.

A seven-member delegation of the WCAL held discussions with Mr. Patil and submitted a 200-page document containing details of human rights violations in the last three decades by the Army and the Assam Rifles under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).

People of Manipur have sharply reacted over Mr. Patil's refusal to repeal the AFSPA. Torch rallies were taken out late last night and thousands of women took part. — UNI
