Congress refutes KCR's claim

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 6. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) members have asked the TRS chief, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, to stop spreading "falsehood" that the Congress would concede the demand for separate Telangana at the earliest.

Reiterating the need for constituting a second States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) in this regard, the Congress MLAs, G. Venkata Reddy, Anam Ramnarayan Reddy and E. Pratap Reddy, contested Mr. Rao's claim that the Union Cabinet would allow the formation of a separate State by December.

`A matter of consensus'

They said it was a ridiculous claim as the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and the AICC had been maintaining that separate Telangana would be possible only with a second SRC and with the consensus of all coalition partners. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, too explained this stand many times. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had also clarified that Telangana would emerge only as a matter of consensus, they said.

The demand for smaller States had been making rounds for quite some time now and the Telangana issue would not be treated in isolation. They said development of backward regions was at best possible in a bigger State and separation was no solution. They urged the Government to create Regional Development Boards for Rayalaseema, Telangana and Andhra regions to ensure uniform development.

Water release sought

They pleaded with the Government for release of Srisailam water to Somasila reservoir to meet the drinking water needs of Nellore and Kavali towns. There was at present only 1.1 tmc water in Somasila which was hardly sufficient to meet the demand. Nellore and Kavali towns needed

3 tmc water whereas the needs of Chennai and Tirupati could be met with 15 tmc. The only way out was release of Srisailam water, they added.
