Congress may go it alone in local body polls

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 6. The Congress may go it alone in the coming elections to local bodies in the State. The Minister for Rural Development and Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, D. Srinivas, gave enough indications to this effect during an informal chat with reporters here on Monday.

Workers' interests

Asked whether the alliance with the Left parties and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) would be continued in the elections to local bodies, he said, "We dare not stop Congress workers for long. We can't force them to keep quiet for long. We have to consider their feelings. We are under pressure and recognise the actual position."

No re-nomination

To another question, Mr. Srinivas said he was not interested in getting re-nominated to the APCC chief's post for another term. "I was nominated to the post by Sonia Gandhi, and the Congress party won with the blessings of you all. Now I would like to disappear from the scene. In no way I am interested in continuing in the post," he said.

Whether the party would give the ticket to the person who caused the Asifnagar by-election, he said even for his own ticket Ms. Gandhi had to sign and allot it.

Regarding the incident in which a rebel candidate contested at Narsipatnam in the last Assembly elections, Mr. Srinivas said the rebel had a right to contest. By mistake two persons were given B form then.
