Rain brightens crop prospects

By Our Special Correspodent

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 6. Moderate to heavy rain continued in the State for the third day on Monday benefiting crops and drinking water sources, under the wet spell caused by the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.

The low-pressure area remained stationary in the west-central Bay. Under its influence, rain would continue for two more days, said C.V.V.Bhadram, Director, State Met Office.

The south-west monsoon turned vigorous in Rayalaseema and active in coastal Andhra and Telangana. Isolated heavy falls are forecast for Tuesday also in Rayalaseema and the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore.

The rain on the third day was widespread, heavy and evenly distributed. Rayalaseema and Telangana emerged chief gainers. The skies were overcast and inclement weather prevailed in the State throughout the day.

One drowned

Many rivulets in Anantapur and Cuddapah districts were in spate. One person was drowned in the flash floods in Buggavanka, in Cuddapah town. An uninterrupted downpour battered Srisailam town disrupting the pushkarams. The gain was recorded at a heavy of 10 c.m. The drizzle at Vijayawada was incessant becoming torrential occasionally playing havoc on the ghats teeming with millions.

The Government heaved a sigh of relief as the fresh rain would mitigate the drinking water hardship at a number of places. The Commissioner for Disaster Management, Asutosh Mishra, described the situation as "very heartening".

The other chief amounts of rainfall recorded during the 24 hours ending this morning were: Perur 7 c.m., Kandukur, Punganur 6 c.m. each, Cuddapah, Pakala, Prakasam Barrage 5 c.m. each, Ongole, Tirupati Airport, Vijayawada Airport, Yemmiganur 4 c.m. each, Arogyavaram, Hindupur, Rayachoti, Satyavedu 3 c.m.each, Anantapur, Chittoor, Kakinada, Kavali, Visakhapatnam airport, Chilmattur, Yelamanchili, Eturunagaram, Mantralayam, Podili and Sriramsagar 2 c.m. each.
