`Engineers have to play key role'

NEW DELHI SEPT. 6. "The contribution of the National Thermal Power Corporation in the country's power sector reform programme is appreciable and in this endeavour young engineers have to play a crucial role to realise the dream of power in abundance," said the Union Cabinet Secretary, B.K. Chaturvedi, today while inaugurating the induction programme of NTPC Executive Trainees-2004 batch.

The Secretary (Power), R.V. Shahi, said: "The country needs substantial capacity addition to support the growth plans of all the sectors and all those joining the power sector should be ready to meet the challenges of the growth potential".

The Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, C.P. Jain, said: "The future challenges in the power sector should be achieved only by continuous learning, sense of urgency, world class quality consciousness and maintenance of ethical standards".

Gold medals were presented to K. Anoop (Engineering), Disha Awasthi (HR) and Bidisha Sen (Chemistry). Besides the toppers, 13 other meritorious trainees were also awarded. The training and development efforts of NTPC are spearheaded by Power Management Institute, Noida.

Award for Teacher

NEW DELHI SEPT. 6. The Manager of Kamal Public School, R. K. Tandon, has been honoured with the prestigious Dr. Radhakrishnan Memorial National Teacher Award 2004. The award was presented to him jointly by the Delhi Industries Minister, Mangat Ram Singhal, and the former Education Minister, Narendra Nath, on the eve of Teacher's Day.

On the occasion, the Radhakrishnan Shiksha Ratan Samman-2004 was awarded to the school Principal, Reena Tandon. The Delhi Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, presented the award for her dedication to the field of education.

DPS investiture ceremony

NEW DELHI SEPT. 6. Delhi Public School, Dadri, held its "Investiture Ceremony" over the week-end. The Chairman of the DPS Society, Narendra Kumar, was the chief guest. He administered the oath of office and praised the teachers for their hard work.

Ashok Chandra, Co-Chairman of the DPS Society, was the guest of honour. The Principal, Kamini Bhasin, welcomed the guests. The junior school children presented a colourful programme.

Special gold coin

NEW DELHI SEPT. 6. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Guru Granth Sahib, a special gold coin has been introduced and presented with Siropas (Robes of religious honour) to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee has brought out the coin that has been designed by the Jaipur- based Dwarka Gems Limited to mark the historic occasion. The gold coin contains a symbolic representation of Guru Granth Sahib, the spiritual teachings of Sikh Gurus and a lotus flower, considered a symbol of knowledge.
