HYDERABAD, SEPT. 6. The need for a closer cooperation between India and European nations on research projects relating to climate and environment was stressed by Anver Ghazi, Head of Global Change Research Unit and Advisor, Earth Observation Centre, European Commission in Belgium. He was delivering the keynote on the opening day of the five-day Indo-European workshop on "Climate change - natural disasters" at the University of Hyderabad here on Monday. Dr. Ghazi elaborated on the various projects being taken up by the Indo-European Commission. The workshop too is taking place under this Commission's Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement. Meteorologists, oceanographers, environmentalists, earth scientists and other experts from the EU countries and India are participating in the workshop, according to a press release. Inaugurating the workshop, Kota Harinarayana, Vice-Chancellor and Indian coordinator for the workshop, explained the genesis of the agreement signed in Brussels last year after a discussion between high-level delegations of the Government of India and European Union. Y. P. Kumar, advisor, International Affairs, Central Government Department of Science Technology spoke.
