HYDERABAD, SEP. 6. A police head constable, J. Thirupathi, who rushed to a house wielding lathi on learning that thieves had broken into it, sustained serious injuries on head when one of the intruders attacked him with an iron rod at Balanagar in the small hours of Monday. The two thieves also tried to strangle the Assistant Sub-Inspector, Mohd. Ghouse, before fleeing the house, located at a stone's throwaway from Balanagar police station.
Tip-off given by boy
The two cops were in the police station on night duty when worker of a nearby tea-stall, Manjunath (11), came running to them around 2.30 a.m. saying two unidentified persons were ransacking a house beside his shop. When the two policemen went inside the house, the thieves were trying to break open an almirah. One of the offenders took out an iron rod and attacked Mr. Thirupathi causing bleeding injuries to him. The other thief held Mr. Ghouse against a wall and tried to strangle him. When both policemen collapsed on ground, the thieves fled the place shouting "thieves, thieves". Alerted by their shouts, neighbours woke up and shifted the injured Mr. Thirupathi to a private hospital. His condition was stable, the doctors said. Later, an armed police party combed the locality and learnt that the thieves had lifted five shutters in a row before entering the house by breaking the lock.
