Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, SEPT. 6. Members of the Madurai Corporation Retired Teachers Welfare Association today staged a fast to press their demands. The protestors, led by the president, P.M. Selvaraj, demanded that the Corporation refund the pensioners the interest on provident fund. Mr. Selvaraj said the local body had deducted up to Rs. 20,000 from the headmasters' gratuity amount towards security deposit for "missing" materials such as chairs, tables, desks and benches. However, even after the non-objection certificates were given after audits, the deposits were not returned to the headmasters for 10 years, he alleged. He said those drawing pension from the Corporation between August 1999 and October 2002 had been paying Rs. 100 towards the family security fund and Medical Reimbursement. Later they started drawing the pension from the district treasury. However, the family security fund of Rs. 25,000 was not paid to the family members after the death of pensioners, since the local body had not transferred the monthly deduction of Rs. 100 to the State Government account. Hence, the local body should act immediately. The association also demanded that the Corporation sent the pension proposals to the office of the Accountant General six months prior to retirement and distribute accounts slips to the employees every year.
