TIRUCHI, SEPT. 6. Speakers at the inaugural function of a training programme on `Integrated farming systems for sustainable livelihood,' stressed the need for using biofertilizer as a remedy to the ills plaguing agriculture. They said the haphazard development of cultivation techniques, through the continued use of chemical fertilizer, had driven farmers to a dangerous situation. The programme, sponsored by the `Voice Trust', a non-governmental organisation, and the Indo-German Social Service Society, at Siruganur near here, was aimed at training representatives of 25 non-governmental organisations in different parts of the State, including Tuticorin, Dhamapauri, Erode and Kancheepuram. Inaugurating the training, G. Nammazhwar, president, Agricultural Renewal in India for Sustainable Environment, said that by adopting bio-farming techniques, farmers would be in a position to provide employment opportunities to a large number of farm labourers. S.A.Kader Ibrahim, former Assistant Director, Agriculture, explained the technology to be adopted, by paddy and sugarcane growers, for crop and pest management.
