Summons to Amar Singh in defamation case

MUMBAI, SEPT. 7. A lower court has issued summons to the Samajwadi Party leader, Amar Singh, on a complaint filed by Tata Sons Limited for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the company on the issue of disinvestment of the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited.

On a plea made by counsel of the Tata Sons, a Magistrate in South Mumbai asked Mr. Singh to be present before it on December 6, the next date of hearing.

The order was issued on Monday on a complaint filed by the company over the remarks made by the politician on various news channels wherein he allegedly said that the VSNL had more money in its account than what the Tatas paid to acquire it.

Mr. Singh also claimed that the company had taken out money from the cash reserves of the VSNL and invested it elsewhere. The company denied these allegations and filed a defamation suit, following which the summons was issued.

The complaint alleged that Mr. Singh made these statements with clear knowledge and intention that these comments would be published in newspapers and beamed by news channels. — PTI
