Parthasarathi Shome, adviser to Chidambaram
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
SEPT. 7.
Parthasarathi Shome, economist, has been appointed adviser to the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram. He succeeds Vijay Kelkar, whose term ended on August 31. While Dr. Kelkar was appointed in the rank of Minister of State by the former Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, Dr. Shome will hold the rank of Secretary to the Government.
A former professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Dr. Shome has worked for the International Monetary Fund.
An expert in fiscal policy, he submitted a report to the Planning Commission on the taxation structure during the Tenth Five-Year Plan and the Kelkar Committees on Direct and Indirect Taxes drew heavily from that report. The Shome Committee report had also suggested a reduction in the tax slabs and the withdrawal of most of the tax exemptions.
