Speed up works

Speed up works

Sir, — Widening and improving the P.K.S. Arumugam Road at Sivakasi has been delayed for long. Repeated representations to the municipality have fallen on deaf ears.

Hence, taxpayers are at a loss to know what to do.

There was a drizzling recently and the road between Navadhanya Magamai Hall and the Sri Mariamman Kovil became completely slushy.

Will the authorities concerned do the needful?

T. Nagarajan,

Sivakasi.

Kudos to CM

Sir, — The people of Tamil Nadu should congratulate the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, for having upgraded the State first by bagging three national environment awards (Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra) for innovative development works in reafforestation and water harvesting, restoration of degraded forests and individual category.

R. Anuradha Rajappa,

Batlagundu.

Deplorable act

Sir, — Of late, lawyers have started staging agitations.

This is not expected of them, considering litigants, who are the worst affected.

R. Anusha,

Tuticorin.

Unwarranted strike

Sir, — The one-day nationwide strike by bank employees recently, seeking increase in salary, etc., is unwarranted.

The strike paralysed the country's money flow.

Private organisations extract more work from their employees for less salary, compared to the nationalised banks staff members' workload.

Papjaras,

Kodaikanal.

Appoint teachers

Sir, — A few plus-two teacher posts in the Government Higher Secondary School of Vazhavallan are lying vacant.

Two local graduates were appointed by the Village Education Committee for the time being.

Their salary is borne by the committee. This temporary appointment cannot cater to the educational needs of students. Also, some posts are lying vacant in the village primary school.

I request the authorities concerned to look into this matter.

P. Senthil Saravana Durai,

Vazhavallan.

Whom to blame?

Sir, — One can only take pity on R. Sujatha Kumari of the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam, Kanyakumari district, who lost the gold medal in M. Phil (History) at the just concluded convocation of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli ( The Hindu , September 1, 2004).

She was overtaken by P. Velmurugan of the M.S. University History Department, owing to confusion on the part of the administration.

Of late, to the fate of the M.S. University, the highest triumvirate — the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar and the Controller of Examinations — never speaks in unison. In the above case, the VC should have consulted the COE before announcing the revised list of the medal winners.

A. Subramanian,

Rajapalayam.

Solve problems

Sir, — I have had problems with the linemen of the Kodaikanal Telecom Department since 1995. This is because I refused to pay bribes to the linemen who seem to have more control over the department than their bosses.

No wonder the BSNL is running at losses, while private competitors are making profits.

I have explained in earlier correspondences the importance of having a landline since I am living in a remote area and having a computer to be connected to internet.

Since November 2002, they have disconnected the line, giving an excuse that it passes through forestland. There are other four lines of our neighbours, which are working, but the Karuna Farm lines are cut. This proves vindictiveness.

However, the forest department says it is for the telephone department to follow some procedures. In spite of the line being cut, I continue to receive bills with exorbitant charges.

Nevil Moncher,

Kodaikanal.

Traffic block

Sir, — At the Tirunelveli-Thiruvananthapuram Road, there is a railway crossing at the Palayamkottai-Kulavanikarpuram junction. There is traffic block during peak hours, owing to closure of the railway gate.

I request the authorities to construct an overbridge at the earliest.

D. Dhanasayan,

Tirunelveli.

Ban plastic bags

Sir, — Recently, I visited the Srirangam Temple. Plastic carry bags are freely used on the temple premises. This spoils the serenity of the temple.

So, I request the Devasthanam to ban plastic bags inside the temple.

M.V. Nagadevan,

Suchindrum.

Baffling statement

Sir, — It is good news for Bangalore-bound passengers that the Tuticorin-Bangalore Express running at present via Thiruppatur and Bangarpet was diverted via Dharmapuri and Hosur from September 1, resulting in the saving of distance by 50 km and consequent reduction in the fare. But, what is baffling is the statement of the railways that there is no change in the running time. Thus, passengers are forced to spend the same number of hours in the train.

And the train earns the notorious distinction of the only train to run at a slower and reduced speed.

G.K.S. Kandasubramanian,

Sivaganga.

Infrastructure

Sir, — This is with reference to lack of dustbins in the Head Post Office in Madurai. Hence, the public are forced to put waste papers on the floor. The office should have necessary infrastructure, considering the competition from private courier services.

T. Raj Pravin,

Madurai.

Welcome proposal

Sir, — A proposal to open Directorate of Distance Education Madurai Centre within the city ( The Hindu , 23.08.04) is most welcome. Employed students can avail themselves of the services of the DDE without applying leave in their offices. I hope the MKU Syndicate will certainly approve the proposal.

M.S. Raghavan,

Madurai.

Sivakasi.
