PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 7. Activists of the Pondicherry Agriculturists Union, which is affiliated to the CPI, today staged a demonstration in front of the Assembly urging the authorities to guarantee relief for farmers affected by drought and floods. T. Geethanathan, union general secretary, said the demonstration was in keeping with the all India Farmers Demands Week, starting September 1, by farmers' unions. The protesters also demanded loans for the farm sector from the nationalised banks and cooperative institutions and steps to procure six tmc (thousand million cubic feet) water for the Karaikal region from Cauvery inflows.
