Uma Bharti's release

Sir, — The release of the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, and the withdrawal of the cases against her raise an important question: what if similar charges had been brought against an ordinary person? Would he or she also have been freed within two weeks of arrest?

Apurv Chaturvedi,
Mathura, U.P.

Sir, — In an attempt to avenge the Shibu Soren episode, the Congress has handed the demoralised BJP a much-needed morale booster. It has lost credibility at a time when Assembly elections are round the corner in Maharashtra.

As for the BJP, it has got an emotive election issue and gained an upper hand in the `tainted' Ministers issue. The only outcome of this arrest-and-release drama is that Ms. Bharti has been catapulted to centre-stage.

Jyothi B. Shetty,
Bangalore

Sir, — Blaming Sonia Gandhi for her arrest, Ms. Bharti has advised the Karnataka Chief Minister to act on his own. The BJP leaders seem to be suffering from Sonia-phobia. They see the `Sonia hand' in everything that goes against their interests.

J. Dasgupta,
Coimbatore, T.N.

Sir, — Ms. Bharti was a victim of political vendetta. To charge her with attempt to murder was too much.

B.V. Rao,
Bangalore

Sir, — Both the arrest and release of Ms. Bharti were knee-jerk reactions of the Congress. Can we now expect the UPA Government to take similar action against the `tainted' Ministers?

Soundara Subramanian,
Paramakudi, T.N.
