Letters to the Editor
Sir, The controversy over V.D. Savarkar is unnecesary. In the freedom struggle, Savarkar was but one of many actors who played their part, had their moments of glory (as well as setbacks), and gradually faded away. Even if Savarkar influenced Nathuram Godse, he ought to be forgiven if only on account of the sufferings he underwent in the Cellular Jail.
Anil K. Joshi,
Sir, As a youth, Savarkar started a movement called Abhinav Bharat and trained many youth, including Senaapati Bapat and Mohan Dharia, to fight an armed battle against foreign rule. He was the only freedom fighter to have been sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment. He was considered most dangerous and kept handcuffed day and night in the Andaman jail for 10 years.
Michael G.,
