Kites and a message
By Luv Puri
R.S. PORA,
SEPT. 7.
Today was a day of kite diplomacy along the India-Pakistan international border as the sky sported an array of colours. The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated here by flying kites.
Kite-flying is popular on both sides of the border at this time of the year. Before a ceasefire came into force along the border, as tension ruled high, kite-flying was banned near the border. But today, people could fly kites even near the Zero Line.
At the crack of dawn, kites of all hues hit the sky. As the day progressed, the kites even entered Pakistani air space. A number of kites had the message, "From India with Love," displayed on them. Later in the day, white-coloured kites were flown by Pakistan residents.
Ashwani Kumar from the Indian side said: "The day showed that geographical barriers cannot stop the message of peace."
For some people it was a nostalgic occasion. Atma Ram, a senior citizen said: "Before 1947, we used to go to Sialkot [the Pakistan town 11 km away] to get kites, and people from that side used to come here to buy high-quality thread. Some of my friends used to join me on this day to participate in the sport of kite-flying."
He said that it is hard to break the natural bonds between the people of the two countries, who have shared a centuries-old common culture.
