Child abuse accused remanded to custody

MUMBAI, SEPT. 7. The main accused in the Mumbai child sexual abuse case, John Allan Waters, who was extradited from the United States in connection with the case registered against him in 2001, was today remanded to police custody till September 14.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, V.P. Taware, sent Mr. Waters to seven days' police custody and asked police to follow the international guidelines of extradition.

The court also allowed him home food, medical and legal assistance.

Mr.Water's counsel told the court that the prosecution had made factual errors in registering the case. Following his argument that an arrest memo has to be prepared in the case of an extradited accused, the court pulled up police for failing to do so. The court also expressed its displeasure over police's failure in preparing an arrest panchnama (on the spot report.)

Mr. Waters was brought to India by the Colaba police yesterday, before he was placed under arrest for the alleged offence.

Meanwhile, some children claiming to be from the shelter that Mr. Waters ran, told reporters present in the court that the charges against him were false. They claimed that no wrong was done to them and they were treated very well by the accused. — PTI
