Soli Sorabjee felicitated

NEW DELHI, SEPT.7. The United Lawyers Association yesterday felicitated former Attorney-General Soli J. Sorabjee for his recent appointment as the Chairperson of the United Nations Sub-Commission on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. On his second term as member of the Sub-Commission, Mr. Sorabjee was elected as the Chairperson a few weeks ago on July 26.

"The Sub-Commission can be appropriately described as the "think tank" of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. While the Commission itself is a largely political body, the Sub-Commission is a body of experts. Over the past years, it has dealt with subjects like promotion of the realisation of the right to drinking water and sanitation, corruption and its impact on the full enjoyment of human rights, in particular economic, social and cultural rights, prohibition of forced evictions, human rights and bioethics and terrorism, counter terrorism and human rights," said Mr. Sorabjee who is also the President of United Lawyers Association.

The Sub-Commission is the main subsidiary body of the UN Commission on Human Rights and under the Economic and Social Council, he explained.

Speaking about his new role as the Chairperson, in particular about presiding over discussions, Mr. Sorabjee said, "There were quite a few tense moments and in those moments it was my innate Parsi sense of humour that saw me through!"

Congratulating Mr. Sorabjee on the appointment, former Supreme Court Judge, S.C. Agarwal said, "Being elected as the Chairperson of the Sub-Commission is a recognition of all the work that he has done. His interest on the subject of human rights is well known. This is a matter of pride for us and our county."

Calling Mr. Sorabjee a "global citizen", senior advocate P.P. Rao said, "He has always been interested in human rights issues and has also stood up strongly for the cause of freedom of expression. He is secular to the core and this is a great honour for the country."
