China for early resolution of border issue

BEIJING, SEPT. 7. China today said it hoped an early settlement of the boundary issue with India could be worked out on a "fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable" basis as this was in the interest of both countries.

"India is an important neighbour of China and it is the sincere wish and stated policy of the Chinese Government to continuously deepen the long-term constructive and cooperative partnership between the two countries," the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, quoted the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Kong Quan, as saying.

Asked for his reaction to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's remarks about India-China relations at his recent press conference in New Delhi, Mr. Kong said the Chinese Government attached importance to Dr. Singh's remarks. — UNI
