Mukesh Kumar in sole lead

By Our Sports Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 7. Fresh from his victory in the Hyundai-TNGF Open, the 38-year-old Mukesh Kumar took the opening day honours by carding a seven-under 63 in the Rs. 10 lakh Amby Valley Madras Gymkhana Club golf Open at the Madras Gymkhana Club annexe here on Tuesday.

Busan Asian Games gold medallist Shiv Kapur is beginning to find his form. He has put behind him the performance that saw him finish 15th in the last pro event.

The 22-year-old, who had a bogey free round, finished second with a score of six-under-64.

C. Muniyappa and Amritinder Singh shared the third spot with a total of five-under 65 while four players— B.G. Lalitha Kumara, Naman Dawar, S. Madaiah and Uttam Singh Mundy occupied the fifth position with identical cards of four-under 66.

Firing birdies at will, the Mhow pro and four-time `champion golfer of the year', Mukesh Kumar took advantage of the pleasant weather conditions recording his first birdie on the third hole while scoring successive birdies on the fifth and sixth, the latter with a chip-in from just outside the green.

With the greens holding and the wind not playing up, the conditions were favourable for a perfect round of golf. Taking the turn at three-under Mukesh began his back nine with a birdie and repeated the act on the 12th with a 15-footer.

Consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th gave him the lead.

Shiv Kapur, who began to tee from the 10th, was off to a fine start with a birdie. He fired three more birdies on the 12th, 15th and 18th, the last two with 15-footers.

The scores (after 18 holes): Mukesh Kumar (Mhow) 63; Shiv Kapur (Del) 64; Amritinder Singh (Chd), C. Muniyappa (Ban) 65; B.G. Lalitha Kumara (Sri Lanka), Naman Dawar (Del), S.
