VELLORE, SEPT. 7. The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Vaiko, today declined to comment on the controversy over which party the MDMK or the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam should take credit for the sanctioning of the Sethusamudram project. "Thanks to the unparalleled leader of Tamil Nadu who persuaded the United Progressive Alliance Government and secured the Rs. 2000-crore Sethusamudram project, a 140-year dream of Tamil Nadu" reads a DMK poster carrying a picture of the party leader, M. Karunanidhi, published by the Vellore and Tiruvannamalai district units separately in Arcot town. A little distance away on the road to Arni, an MDMK poster reads: "Anna's dream! Sethusamudram project!! It was Vaiko who raised his voice for the project! It was Vaiko who gave life to the project!! The people's leader beckons." There were many other posters, expressing solidarity with Mr.Vaiko in his current attempt at "creating awareness of the need to link rivers in the country and to make farmers strong.' "Please bear with me. I do not want to enter into any controversy," pleaded Mr. Vaiko when newspersons, who met him at Dhamarapakkam near Arni, sought his comments on the claims made by the two parties. He said that except in Tiruchi, he did not meet reporters, and he did not wish to talk to the press during his current renaissance walk from Tirunelveli to Chennai. Public meetings were the only forums he addressed to interact with people.
