Bodyguard of slain MLC surrenders

LUCKNOW, SEPT. 7. Slain Samajwadi Party MLC Ajit Singh's bodyguard, Sanjay Dwivedi, surrendered before the police at Unnao last night and confessed that ``he had shot the leader by mistake'' under the influence of liquor.

The MLC was killed during his birthday celebrations at a motel in Unnao on Saturday night.

Police said Dwivedi surrendered at the Fatehpur Chhanve police station, confessing that he ``had shot by mistake'' under the influence of liquor. He said he ran away when he realised that he had shot his employer.

Dwivedi also surrendered his gun before the police.

Meanwhile, the State Government today handed over the inquiry of the case to the CB-CID. The government also asked the CB-CID to submit a detailed report within a month and form a special team for the investigation.

An FIR was filed in Unnao against four persons, including MLA from Rae Bareli Akhilesh Singh, in connection with the murder.

Mr Akhilesh Singh had claimed that he was innocent and had demanded a CBI probe into the incident. -- PTI
