This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has roundly condemned those "over-enthusiasts" of Hindi who, by their "fighting" attitude, were doing more harm to the language than good. In this connection, Mr. Nehru specifically mentioned the name of Dr. Raghu Vira, M.P., and declared that the mental attitude displayed by him (Dr. Raghu Vira) was the "greatest enemy" of Hindi. This attitude, he added, would make an enemy of even those who genuinely wanted to promote the cause of Hindi, which had won a great victory inasmuch as it had voluntarily been adopted by the country as the national language. This victory should not be marred by enthusiasts taking a fighting attitude. On the contrary, efforts should be made to complete the task of giving Hindi its due place by a "constructive attitude". Mr. Nehru was speaking at a function held to observe the second anniversary of the Parliamentary Hindi Association on September 8.
