Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, SEPT. 8. N. Pratap Reddy and H. Hanumanthappa, leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular), have strongly opposed the demand for a separate State and condemned the unilateral decision taken in this regard by the lawyers of Hubli-Dharwad and a few other places. Addressing presspersons here today, both were of the view that the question of dividing the State should not arise, especially in the wake of the sacrifices made by many for its unification. According to them, the decision to call for a separate State was taken by a small section and their views did not reflect the opinion of the people of the State. Admitting that the development of north Karnataka had been ignored, Mr. Reddy said that there were ways and means to rectify this. "People can sit together, discuss the issue, and pressure the Government to develop north Karnataka instead of demanding a separate State," he said.
`No dispute'
He said that there was no dispute about the constitution of a Bench of the Karnataka High Court in north Karnataka. The State Government, on its part, had done its best in this regard. In addition, the all-party meeting, convened by the Chief Minister, unanimously resolved that the High Court Bench should be constituted in north Karnataka. He said he would convene a meeting, inviting leaders of all political parties, to chalk out the future course of action, soon.
