Khurana seeks vision document for varsities

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, SEPT. 8. The Rajasthan Governor, Madan Lal Khurana, today directed the universities in the State to prepare a 10-year vision document. "The vision paper should be prepared after a realistic assessment of the present condition of each of the institutions. They should lay down a road map for achievement of future targets," he said.

"Once the universities start functioning as per the vision documents to achieve the set goals, the standard of higher education in Rajasthan would surely go up,'' Mr.Khurana said, addressing the meeting of the Vice- Chancellors Coordination Committee at Raj Bhawan.

Mr. Khurana, who is also the Chancellor of the universities in Rajasthan, said there was a need to create a healthy atmosphere for learning and research in the universities. The varsities should prepare strategies to generate income sources for their programmes, he said. The world over the education scenario had undergone changes and the Indian varsities too should try to achieve global standards in this era of globalisation, Mr.Khurana said.

Expressing concern over the growth in the number of educated unemployed in the State, Mr.Khurana said that the syllabus in the universities needed a review giving more emphasis on jobs and job-oriented courses. The students themselves needed to develop a sense of entrepreneurship and capacity for self employment, he noted.

The Governor told the gathering that he had held talks with the Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, and the Education Minister, Ghanshyam Tiwari, on the problems faced by the universities. The State would make a time-bound programme for the mitigation of problems faced by the varsities on a priority basis, he promised.

Mr.Khurana authorized his Principal Secretary, Umraomal Salodia, and the Secretary Education, Ram Lubhaya, for initiating the process of providing relief to the universities on a time-bound manner.

The coordination meeting was attended by the Higher Education Minister, the Minister of State for Education, Vasudev Devnani and senior officials, besides the Vice-Chancellors.
