HYDERABAD, SEPT. 8. The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham while criticising the alleged humiliation of farmers by banks by denying them loans has demanded sanction of assistance to farmers as announced by both the Central and State Governments and as directed by the RBI. B. Tulasidas, president, and S. Malla Reddy, secretary, in a statement on Wednesday called upon the Government to convene the State-Level Bankers' Committee to review the situation on the agriculture front and take suitable remedial steps. They said there was a need to expedite disbursal of agricultural loans in view of the prevailing drought conditions. For this, the bankers' committee should be convened immediately. According to an estimate of the committee, about 35 lakh farmers were not getting loan assistance from banks. While 19 lakh farmers needed such relief, names of only 13 lakhs were given to banks and only 4.9 lakh were given loans. Against the target of re-scheduling of loans of nine lakh farmers only less than six lakhs were extended this facility. Of the target of Rs.11,205 crores only Rs.5,066 crores were sanctioned as loan.
