Check violence: CPI(M)

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 8. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State unit and the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on Wednesday called upon the Government to take steps for maintenance of law and order in Anatapur district.

B.V. Raghavulu, secretary of the party, in a statement, suggested that the official machinery in the district be alerted for taking steps to ensure that order was maintained. He said political killings in the district were causing deep anguish to people. Whatever be the cause for the murders, it was the Government's duty to take strong measures to prevent them.

In another statement, K.G. Kannabiran, PUCL national president, expressed anguish at the `unabated' violence in the district, particularly `disturbing' the `culpable indifference' of the police administration. He said peace talks with the CPI (ML) in the context of the violence appear to be `farcical'.

The PUCL leader pointed out: "such violence sponsored or connived at by the Government and encouraged by other representatives of the ruling party" must be forthwith stopped before preparing the ground for peace talks.
