Data misleading, says AIDWA

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 8. Reacting to the Census data regarding the increase in the population of Muslims, the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) today questioned the authorities for releasing religion-based data without correlating it to other demographic features, and termed the figures as misleading.

Factors such as infant mortality, income, literacy, occupation etc., should be taken into account while giving data about the increase in the population of a community, the AIDWA general secretary, Brinda Karat, said here.

Moreover, the authorities, while counting the Muslim population, forgot to mention that the 2001 data included the population of Jammu and Kashmir which was not taken into account in the 1991 data, she said.

The data gave a misleading picture that the population growth was linked to religious affiliations, she said adding that there were no monolithic groups such as Hindus or Muslims as far as analysis of population growth was concerned.

She said another misleading picture given was that of the sex ratio. — UNI
