Charge against Cherkalam stirs a hornets' nest

By Our Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD, SEPT. 8. The remarks made by the former district president of the Indian Union Muslim League and business magnate, K.S. Abdulla, against the Manjeswaram MLA and former Minister of Self-Government, Cherkalam Abdulla, has stirred a hornet's nest in Muslim League politics in the district.

Mr. Abdulla, better known as KS, accused Mr. Cherkalam of having indulged in corruption while in office as the Minister and demanded a CBI inquiry into the disproportionate assets amassed by him. Mr. Abdulla is also reported to have expressed his intention to approach the Lok Ayukta against Mr. Cherkalam.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also joined issue, with its veteran leader and party State publicity wing convener, Madikkai Kumaran, urging the Government to hold a CBI inquiry into the alleged financial irregularities of Mr. Cherkalam Abdulla.

Mr. Kumaran also urged the IUML leadership and the Chief Minister to reveal the facts behind the allegation. The BJP leader was speaking at the inaugural function of an election convention at Karadukka as part of the campaign for the byelection in Karadukka scheduled later this month.
