By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 8. The Congress today appointed senior leaders, A.K. Antony and Ajit Jogi, both members of the Working Committee to head the panel to screen the candidates for next month's elections to the Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh assemblies.

Mr. Antony, who stepped down as Kerala Chief Minister last month, heads the screening committee for Maharashtra where the poll is scheduled to be held on October 13. The other committee members are the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, the former Rajasthan Chief Minister, Shiv Charan Mathur, the AICC general secretary, Margaret Alva, and State Congress chief, Prabha Rau.

The panel is likely to hold its meeting soon after the current round of negotiations on seat-sharing between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party is concluded.

The former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Ajit Jogi, will head the panel for Arunachal Pradesh where polling is due on October 7. The committee includes the former Assam Minister, Devendra Konwar, former State Chief Ministers, Geong Apang and Mukut Mithi, and the AICC secretary, Ramesh Chennithala. The panel is expected to complete its work ahead of the meeting of the AICC central election committee on September 13.
