BANGALORE, SEPT. 8. In a last ditch effort to avert a showdown between Kannada film producers and exhibitors, the president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), S. Ramesh, has appealed to cinema owners to screen new Kannada films slated for release on Friday. Mr. Ramesh told presspersons, after a marathon meeting of producers, distributors and exhibitors here on Wednesday, that he hoped that cinema owners would honour his appeal. He said he would write to K.P. Pandey, Chairman of the high-powered committee constituted by the Government, urging him to convene a meeting within a couple days to find an amicable solution to the problem, he said. Sources in the Kannada Film Producers' Association (KFPA) told The Hindu that some producers attended the KFCC meeting with an intention to stall it. But they did not succeed in their designs. The KFPA was of the opinion that the KFCC had no locus standi to convene such an important meeting as it had announced elections. But after a heated exchange between the representatives of the KFPA and others, Mr. Ramesh and the honorary secretary, Thomas D'souza, urged exhibitors not to create hurdles for releasing new Kannada films.
Exhibitors relent?
Some cinema owners present at the meeting reportedly agreed to release new Kannada films on Friday. Mr. Ramesh was making desperate efforts to bring about a rapprochement between the KFPA and cinema owners, in the light of the former threatening to launch a Gokak-like agitation, if cinema owners refused to screen new Kannada films from Friday.
Panel meeting
The KFCC wanted the Pandey Committee to convene a meeting before Friday to work out a formula to end the stand-off between producers and exhibitors even as the KFPA was scheduled to meet on Friday. If no solution is found in the two meetings, the issue is likely to acquire a political dimension.
Ban threat
Meanwhile, in an unsigned statement, the Karnataka Cinema Theatre Owners' Association said it would "ban all films of S.V. Rajendra Singh (Babu) for five years" in all cinemas in the State.
