VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 8. The crackdown by the anti-goonda squad (AGS) of the Police Department has yielded good results during August. Following instructions from the City Police Commissioner, the AGS raided 14 gambling dens and arrested 76 persons. An amount of Rs. 88,715 was also seized from them. On a tip-off, the squad arrested four others on the charges of betting and recovered Rs. 9,999 from them. In a separate incident, 16 persons were apprehended for causing public nuisance while 23 girls involved in flesh trade near the bus stand area were also taken into custody.
29 bootleggers held
A total of 29 bootleggers were held for selling liquor on a dry day. As many as 696 liquor bottles and a cash of Rs. 3,350 was seized from them. The AGS also shifted focus on persons indulging in sale of pornographic CDs. Eleven persons were arrested in this connection and equipment worth Rs. 70,000 were recovered from them. Similarly, 16 persons were nabbed for offences under the Immoral Traffic Act and a sum of Rs. 8,950 was recovered from the arrested. The AGS also came down cracking on two persons in Nunna village for selling illicit country arrack while four others were arrested for diverting blue kerosene, estimated to cost Rs. 8,000, to the black market.
