Excess rain

in district

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 8. The district received 155 per cent excess rainfall during the six-day period from September 2, with 6.7 c.m. of rain being received as against a normal of 2.6 c.m., according to the Met authorities here. The precipitation was due to a revival of the monsoon under the influence of a low-pressure system in the Bay off Andhra Pradesh. However, no rain was received in the rest of the State during the period. If the rainfall received since June 1 is taken into consideration, rainfall has been normal in Thiruvananthapuram district so far, while there is a deficit of 23 per cent Statewide.

Water supply

disruption

Water supply to the coastal areas of the city, including Valiathura, Bangladesh Colony, Ponnara Nagar, Airport, Sanghumugham, Beemapally, Poonthura, Kamaleswaram and Eenchakkal will be disrupted from 5 p.m on September 10 to 12 noon on September 11. An official press note by the Kerala Water Authority said this was on account of extending the pipeline augmentation scheme to Valiathura and the airport.

Lawyers stage

dharna

Lawyers owing allegiance to the Trivandrum Bar Association today staged a dharna in front of the association office as part of an all-India agitation to protest the police action on lawyers in Lucknow. The association president, Konchira G. Neelakantan Nair, inaugurated the dharna. The lawyers also wore badges to the Court to register their protest.

Volvo service

suspended

The KSRTC has suspended the Garuda air-conditioned super luxury bus service on the Palakkad- Thiruvananthapuram route from September 11. An official press quoting the KSRTC managing director said the service was being suspended for body modifications mandated by the fitness certificate rules. The press note said the Volvo service would be substituted by a super deluxe bus on the same route.

Diabetes

clinic

A diabetes clinic has started functioning at the Cosmopolitan Hospitals here. Headed by Mathew Thomas, former head of the Department of Medicine in the Medical College Hospital here, the clinic will function from 10 a.m. to 12 noon every Saturday, according to a press note. It will offer the service of an ophthalmologist, neurologist, nephrologist and general surgeon to control blood sugar and identify patients at risk of systemic complications related to the disease. An orientation programme for patients and relatives will be organised every two months.

Ganja peddling: one held

The Thampanoor police have arrested a 40-year-old man on the charge of peddling ganja. The police identified the accused as Hameed. He was produced before the court on the charge of violating the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
