Clear day, cloudy later

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. Delhiites will wake up to a mainly clear sky on Thursday which is likely to become partly cloudy afternoon or evening, the weatherman has said.

The maximum and minimum temperature at Safdarjung on Wednesday was 38.4 degrees Celsius and 24.5 degrees Celsius respectively. At Palam, the maximum and minimum temperature was 38.2 degrees Celsius and 24.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

The maximum humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 82 per cent and 79 per cent respectively. The minimum humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 27 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.

Circuit commissioned

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today inaugurated the commissioning of the second circuit of the Bamnauli-Ballabhgarh section of the 400 KV Ring Main around the Capital. The first circuit was commissioned last year.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit hoped this would improve the power transmission system of the Capital. Commenting on the power sector reforms, she said the fruits of the reforms had already started showing. "It is only a matter of time before uninterrupted power supply becomes a reality," she said.

Ms. Dikshit said the discoms have been directed to make the necessary investments in augmenting the distribution system and thus improving the quality of power supply. The 52.8 km Bamnauli-Ballabhgarh section has been commissioned at an estimated cost of Rs. 43 crores.

The Delhi Power Minister, Haroon Yusuf, and the Delhi Transco chief, Arun Goyal, were also present on the occasion.

Tihar inmate commits suicide

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. A Tihar Central Jail inmate allegedly hanged himself to death inside the jail on Tuesday. An enquiry into the matter has been initiated by the area Sub-Divisonal Magistrate.

The deceased, Om Prakash, was lodged in the jail in connection with cases of dacoity and the Arms Act since last November. He allegedly hanged himself from an iron grill using the belt of a bag as noose. While his body was sent for post-mortem at Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital, the jail authorities said the Rajouri Garden SDM was carrying out an enquiry into the incident.

Man found dead

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. The body of a 35-year-old man was found near his house at Narela in North-West Delhi today.

According to the police, the body of a Class IV employee of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, Sriram Prasad, a resident of Sector-10, Pocket-4, Narela, was found near his house around 7 a.m. The post-mortem revealed that he had sustained internal injuries on the head.

A case of murder has been registered at the Narela police station and further investigations in the case are on.

Minor fire

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. A minor fire broke out in Surya Kiran building at Connaught Place in New Delhi today. The fire was brought under control within minutes and nobody was injured.

According to a fire department spokesperson, the fire broke out on the 11th floor of the building around 7-30 p.m. At least six fire tenders were pressed into service. The fire, which had begun from an air-conditioning duct, was quickly doused with the help of fire extinguishers following which the fire fighting exercise was called off.
