Speedera, VSNL join hands

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 9. Speedera Networks, a U.S. based content delivery network (CDN) specialist, and VSNL, the Tata owned telecom and Internet service provider, have joined hands, anticipating a growing market for CDN driven services.

The two firms announced here on Thursday that VSNL would build its own CDN using Speedera's expertise and `solutions' resulting in faster and physically closer content delivery for VSNL's customers using the Internet. The move is targeted at enterprise users, mostly.

Speedera said its technologies would be deployed in VSNL's data centres and the telecom firm would sell its SpeedSuite services to customers.

The firm also announced the opening of a centre in Bangalore, where its Indian business Speedera India, would be headquartered.

The firm aims to make the Internet faster. Providing distributed content and application delivery services, it helps customers offer bandwidth intensive content, graphics, and streaming media on the web, operating `edge servers' on more than 1,000 backbone networks, the CDNs. This puts content physically closer to users and speeding up downloads and streams.

Founded in 1999 by the president and chief executive officer, Ajit Gupta, chief architect, Richard Day, and chief technology officer, Eric Swildens, the private start-up is backed by investors including Hewlett Packard, Stanford University and Trinity Ventures.
