Gulbarga
By Our Special Correspondent
GULBARGA, SEPT. 9. The Hyderabad Karnataka Yuva Horata Samiti (HKYHS) on Thursday decided to continue to boycott Rajyotsava Day celebrations and hoist a flag in the city reiterating its demand for a separate State for the Hyderabad Karnataka region.
Only solution
The president of the Samiti, Raju Kulageri, told presspersons here that the Samiti, which had been hoisting a "separate State flag" from November 2001, would continue to do so this year and demand separate State status for the region, as it was the only solution to eradicate the backwardness of the region. He said that the president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti (HKHS) and former Minister, Vaijnath Patil; the former Minister Vishwanath Reddy Mudnal; and advocate and former legislator Hanumanthrao Desai would be invited to hoist the flag in the city on November 1.
Invited
Dr. Kulageri said that though his relationship with the HKHS was strained owing to the decision of the HKYHS to fight the previous Assembly election on the separate State issue, much against the wishes of the HKHS, the leaders of the HKHS were being invited to hoist the flag. They were being invited in recognition of their struggle for the welfare of the backward region.
Disagreement
He said that he disagreed with the contention of the HKHS that it would reconsider the demand for a separate State if the Centre agreed to amend Article 371 of the Constitution, which would empower the State to provide reservation for the people from backward regions. He said that even if the Centre agreed to amend the Article, the problems faced by the Hyderabad Karnataka region would not be solved.
Amendment
Amendment of the Constitution was not the way to remove backwardness from the region. He also said that that was the reason why people of Telangana and Vidharbha were seeking separate State status. He said that the HKYHS also did not support the demand for a separate State placed by a few Bar Associations of the Bombay Karnataka region. He said that their demand for separate State for north Karnataka was based on the denial of a permanent Bench of the High Court, while the HKHYS had been demanding separate State status for Hyderabad Karnataka citing several reasons, including the backwardness of the region, neglect by the successive Governments, and the denial of the High Court Bench to Gulbarga.
