NEW DELHI, SEPT. 9. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today defended the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, who is under attack from the Left parties for engaging experts from multilateral institutions such as the World Bank in the Commission. Dr. Singh, who also heads the Planning Commission, complimented the Commission for starting the process of mid-term appraisal. He said: "The internal Commission has started the process in right earnest, including extensive consultations with the Central Ministries, the State Governments and outside experts." The four Left parties yesterday questioned the merit of involving outside experts and asked the Government to "reconsider" the move. PTI
