Deemed varsity status
CHENNAI SEPT. 9. The Centre has attached the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre at Kumbakonam as an off-campus centre of the Shanmuga Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, a deemed university at Thanjavur. The decision, taken on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC), in effect, means grant of the deemed university status to the centre. It is subject to the centre adhering to the guidelines/instructions issued by the UGC and the All-India Council for Technical Education from time to time as applicable to the deemed universities, says an official release.
K. Subrahmanyam stamp today
CHENNAI SEPT. 9. The Department of Posts will release tomorrow a commemorative postage stamp, in the denomination of Rs. 5, on K. Subrahmanyam, a pioneer in the film field. The stamp will be released by Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster-General, Tamil Nadu Circle at a function organised by the Director K. Subrahmanyam Memorial Trust at Narada Gana Sabha at 7 p.m. An album containing the stamps will be presented to the Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao. Stamps, first-day covers, information sheets will be available for sale at a special counter to be opened at the venue, besides at all philatelic bureaus/counters from the date of issue, says an official release.
Festival of Indian films
Pondicherry Sept. 9. The 21st annual Festival of Indian Films, organised jointly by the Directorate of Film Festivals, New Delhi, the Directorate of Information and Publicity, Pondicherry, and the Pondicherry-based Navadarshan Film Society will be held for three days at the Muruga Theatre, Thattanchavady, near here, from tomorrow. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told newsmen here today that the festival, under the banner of Indian Panorma, would bring into focus good movies for students and others to view them. Mr. Rangasamy would inaugurate the film festival and present a cash award of Rs. 10,000 and a memento to Amshan Kumar, who directed the Tamil movie `Oruththi'. This is being given under the Sankaradoss Swamigal Award scheme operated by the Pondicherry Government, says a release.
Minister to meet Congressmen
CHENNAI SEPT. 9. The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Culture, S. Jaipal Reddy, will attend the All-India Film Industry's conference on regional cinema here tomorrow. He will meet the Congress activists at Satyamurthi Bhavan on Saturday. Mr. Reddy, who arrived here tonight on a three-day visit, will release the first audio cassette of a Tamil film on Friday evening and attend a felicitation function organised by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, according to a PIB release. On Saturday, Mr.Reddy will visit the Ramakrishna Mission Students' Home at Mylapore and meet a delegation of the Film and Television Producers Guild of South India before attending the 40th anniversary celebrations of Krishnasamy Associates, along with Union Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, the release said.
Housing for Congress veteran
CHENNAI SEPT. 9. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today handed over an allotment order of a Tamil Nadu Housing Board Flat to a Congress veteran, who was reportedly asked not to stay on the Congress grounds at Teynampet. The headquarters of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in a release here said Raju Pillai, who belonged to Kaniseri in Virudhunagar district, was ``driven out of the Congress'' following his public protest to the release of a special stamp on the late Union Minster, Murasoli Maran. As Ms.Jayalalithaa, who came to know of the plight of Mr.Raju, who lived on the freedom fighters pension provided by the State Government, directed release of Rs.3,000 a month so that he would be able to remit the rent for the flat, besides meeting his family expenditure. She handed over the cash assistance to him at the Secratariat, the release said.
Car festival
Thanjavur Sept.9. The car festival, as part of the annual feast of Pudumai Matha basillica at Poondi, was held here last night. The illuminated car was taken in a procession with the beautifully decorated idol of Pudumai Matha. Hundreds of people witnessed the festival. Fireworks marked the occasion. The festival was inaugurated by Antony Devotta, Bishop of Tiruchi. The 10-day annual feast started with flag hoisting on August 30. It ended today with special mass at the church.
Takes over
KARUR SEPT.9. Abhin Dinesh Modak today took over as the Superintendent of Police at a function held at the District Police Office here. Previously, he was SP, Narcotics Intelligence Bureau, Chennai. The outgoing SP, S. Davidson Devasirvatham, handed over the charge to him.
Couple wanted in murder case
TIRUNELVELI SEPT. 9. The Vijayanarayanam police are looking for a couple who allegedly murdered Y. Pushpam (45), a widow of Pondicherry under the Vijayanarayanam police station limits. The police said S. Rani (25) had borrowed Rs.5,000 from the victim four months ago and she reportedly failed to pay back the amount within the repayment period. As Ms. Pushpam asked her to repay the money, Rani and her husband, P. Shanmugasundaram (30), asked her to come to their house on yesterday to settle the dispute. When an argument broke out between them over the repayment schedule, the couple allegedly murdered her and threw the body in a ditch near their house.
Held with explosive material
THNEI SEPT.9 . Andisamy of Kamankallur in Varushandu area was arrested today on the charges of possessing explosive material illegally. The police, during a raid, seized 25 detonators and 25 gelatine sticks from him. A case has been registered.
One killed in road accident
NAGERCOIL SEPT. 9. One person was killed on the spot and one injured in a road accident on Wednesday. According to police sources, Madhu, a second year commerce student of N.I. College in Kumaracoil was returing home after classes when a motorbike from the opposite direction collided with his vehicle, killing him. The police are investigating the case registered.
Gang loots jewels, cash
Tirunelveli Sept. 9 . The Palayamkottai police are looking for a gang, which burgled 52 sovereigns of golden ornaments and cash from the house of a contractor at Maharaja Nagar. The police said the gang gained entry into the house of Murugan, a sand contractor, through the back door last night and stole the valuables worth 1.25 lakh from the locker when the inmates were away. On seeing the inmates entering the house, the burglars ran away. Though the police said only 52 sovereigns were stolen, sources close to Mr. Murugan said more than 200 sovereigns and an unspecified amount of cash were stolen.

NAGERCOIL SEPT. 9. Normal life was thrown out of gear following heavy rains, which lashed various parts of the district on Thursday. The sky remained overcast throughout the day. A maximum rainfall of 45.1 mm was recorded at Chittar I followed by 32.3 mm in Chittar II, 31.2 mm in Kannimar, 27 mm each in Pechipparai and Mukkadal, 19.8 mm in Perunchani, 16.3 mm in Boothapandi, 10.7 mm in Surulode, 9.8 mm in Nagercoil, 5.8 mm in Poigai and 5.2 mm in Kottaram.
Last date
MADURAI SEPT. 9. The last date for submission of application forms for old and revised engineering examinations of Madurai Kamaraj University is September 23. Students who fail to submit the forms by that date would be allowed to submit the applications till September 30 with a penalty of Rs.15, according to a release from K.S. Gopalakrishnan, Controller of Examinations (in-charge). Theory examinations would be held in the university buildings, Palkalainagar campus, and the practicals in the respective colleges. Candidates could obtain the applications from their colleges.
Grievances day
ERODE SEPt. 9 . The grievances day for the Perundurai TNEB consumers would be conducted on September 10 at 3 p.m. at the Executive Engineer's office.
Demonstration
ERODE SEPt. 9. Protesting the Union Government's order asking brick manufacturers to mix fly ash in bricks, and also the alleged harassment by the Pollution Control Board on the chambers, the members of the Erode, Salem and Namakkal district Brick Manufacturers Association staged a demonstration today in front of the Erode Municipal Office.
Killed
Krishnagiri Sept. 9 . A constable was killed and three injured when the auto they were travelling to Vellore in rammed into a lorry parked near the Velegalnathan check post at Bargur here today. Police said that Mohan (50)died on the spot.
