Local people will get opportunities, says L&T

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, SEPT. 9. Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has asserted that local contractors will enjoy a competitive advantage in catering for the needs of specialised fabrication of large offshore structures in the yard vacated by Mazagaon Docks Ltd.

A press release from Henry A. Karkada, joint general manager, Corporate Communications, L&T, here said that the company had been granted a two-year lease of a part of the area, which was vacated when Mazagaon Docks Ltd. closed operations in Mangalore. L&T was working with the local contractors for all the development activities in the yard, the release said.

At present, the yard was not "qualified" for such fabrication, and trial fabrication work was being done employing certified contractors, who possessed requisite technical qualifications and experience. Once the yard was qualified, L&T expected that ONGC contracts could be executed here.

It may be recalled here that Yuva Shakti organisation, at a press meet, had alleged that L&T had set up an industry in the area vacated by Mazagaon Docks Ltd. at Panambur near here.

There were employment opportunities for more than 2,000 people here, but the company had decided not to employ locals. Instead, it was employing people from other States with the help of contractors.
