Industrial co-operatives planned for minorities

COIMBATORE, SEPT. 9. An advisory meeting conducted by the district administration today resolved to form industrial co-operatives for minorities and to identify 220 beneficiaries for the same.

The District Collector, S. Kosalaraman, convened an advisory meeting at the District Collectorate today aimed at creating industrial co-operatives to help women and youth from the minority community. The meeting also discussed modalities for bringing bankers closer to the minorities so as to enable financial assistance for their business initiatives. The District Collector conducted an interview for identifying beneficiaries, who would be given Rs. 1 lakh, which should be paid back over a period of five years.

As many as 127 Muslim women and youth were given Rs. 46.27 lakhs through nationalised banks and 115 persons who did not form part of industrial co-operatives were given an aid of Rs. 45.95 lakhs for their business ventures.

Award for institutions

The Moulana Azad Educational Foundation coming under the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment of the Government of India has instituted an award for minority institutions, which focus on women's education. A release from the District Collector said that the Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Award would carry a cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh for institutions, which excel in education of minority women.

The institutions should not be of foreign origin and they should not apply for the award. They should be recommended for the award by any the following dignitaries: a Member of Parliament, vice-chancellors, former vice-chancellors, Secretaries to Government for Education or Human Resource Development, Director of National Council for Educational Research and Training, Director for National Educational Planning and Administrative Council, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Director of the National Teachers Education Council and Directors of State Educational Research and Training Council.
