Committees soon for sanitation programme

SALEM, SEPT. 10 . All village panchayats in Salem district would soon have committees to implement rural water and sanitation schemes, the Collector, A. Sukumaran, has said.

Inaugurating the `Advocacy workshop on Tamil Nadu Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme' organised by the TWAD Board for its officials here today, the Collector said that these committees, in close co-ordination with the officials concerned, would strive to meet the needs for village sanitation and create water sources for villagers.

The presidents of village panchayats would head these committees. Chandrapilai Valasu in Vazhapadi, Anuppur in Ayothiapattinam, Sangeethpatti in Omalur block, Chitrapatti Pudur in Kolathur union and Thenkumarai village in Talaivasal block had been identified for forming these committees. All basic amenities including drinking water would be provided in these villages, he said and added that rural water supply and sanitation sector had been identified as the key development agenda in the Tenth Five Year Plan of the State Government with stress on community empowerment.

Booklet released

The Collector also released a booklet on the project and the Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency, Manimanthiri, received the first copy. Under this programme, repair works in existing schemes would be undertaken. Extension of drinking water schemes to areas nearby also would be carried out. Based on requirements, new schemes would be introduced. Water harvesting structures such as tanks, ponds and rainwater harvesting would be carried out to augment the groundwater table.

The scheme also would discourage people from using the open space for defecation. Individual toilets would be constructed in all houses. Sanitary complexes would be constructed at schools and other places of public gatherings with adequate water facilities. The need for protecting environment would also be stressed. The members of the self-help groups would be utilised. The main objective was to promote total sanitation among the villagers.

Superintendent Engineer, Salem-Namakkal Circle, M. Singaram, presided over the programme. Executive Engineer, Rural Water Supply Division, TWAD Board, Salem, S. Sankaran, welcomed the gathering. Nearly 100 officials from various divisions of the TWAD Board discussed the technical aspects of the programme.
