Census report

Sir, — This refers to the report "Revised data shows drop in growth rate of Muslims" (Sept. 10).

Hope the new data will satisfy the Sangh Parivar outfits and allay their fears that Muslims are going to outnumber the others in the coming years.

Shadaan Alam,
Aligarh, U.P.

Sir, — The latest Census findings need to be analysed not by politicians but by demographers. Before coming to any conclusion on the rate of growth registered by a particular community, region-wise growth and the rate of growth among the socially and educationally backward should be analysed. Increase in population has more to do with the social and educational backwardness of a community.

S. Sundararaman,
Bangalore

Sir, — The reaction of the Sangh Parivar is negative and reactionary. Instead of complaining, it can positively plan to educate the masses about the advantages of economically viable family units. The two-child norm is socially viable and universally acceptable. The Government and the Opposition should sit together and work out plans to universalise education schemes.

S. Balasubramanian,
Thane, Maharashtra

Sir, — The NDA Government was accused of saffronising education by tampering with the facts.

The UPA Government seems to be adjusting national data to please a section of the population.

K.S. Ramakrishnan,
Chennai
