Sir, This refers to the editorial, "Systemic lapses" (Sept. 9). In dealing with the women accused of lynching gangster Akku Yadav, the ground realities should be borne in mind. The women of Kasturba Nagar basti, Nagpur, were victims of organised atrocity for over 10 years. As for those who argue they should be dealt with like ordinary criminals, it can only be said that Indian society is yet to learn to appreciate the good deeds done for a common cause.

Sir, Yadav's lynching certainly does not aid the cause of justice. But to say that it does not aid the cause of the women is not convincing. The fact that Yadav escaped punishment is proof enough of the fact that the sexual predator often escapes the law.
