ANANTAPUR, SEPT. 10. The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has observed that the Congress Government appears to be acting with vengeance in the matter of killing of Telugu Desam activists allegedly by their Congress rivals. Talking to newspersons here today, the party leaders -- K. Ramakrishna and M.V. Ramana -- said the Government was desired to contain the killings by taking stern measures. But the arguments being aired by ruling party leaders that the killings had historical background were in no way justifiable for a Government. They were also relating the killings to incidents that had taken place during the nine-year TDP rule.
Judicial probe sought
The CPI leaders suggested the Government to at least transfer the police officers, who were facing charges of being partial or being in collusion with local Congress leaders, to send the right signals across. They opined that all the post-poll violent incidents be probed with a sitting judge of the High Court and prove the sincerity of the Government.
TDP criticised
They also criticised the TDP for trying to politicise the killings. The two parties had met the Governor on the issue for partial political gains. But the approach of the two parties would in no way help resolve the problem, the CPI leaders felt. Even the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had failed to observe the incidents with responsibility. Instead of taking steps to contain the violence, his exhibition of impatience on the police was undesirable, the CPI leaders said. They appealed to both -- the Congress and the TDP -- to make sincere efforts to put an end to the killings.
`Peace rally will help'
The CPI leaders also observed that the people had lost confidence in the police due to the recent incidents and their alleged inaction or partiality. They wanted the Chief Minister to take out a peace rally along with leaders of other political parties in the affected areas so that a positive message could reach people. They also urged the Government to implement the recommendations of the House panel constituted in the last Assembly on faction feuds The CPI leaders also urged political parties not to allow leaders with criminal background to contest elections from their platform. Such leaders would be in no way helpful to people.
