YADGIR, SEPT. 10. Farmers of the area, led by Veerbasantreddy, Yadgir MLA, and the vice-president of the Kanataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Basavaraj Tambakki, held a dharna in front of the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company office here today. They were demanding regular supply of power to rural areas and the establishment of more substations. The farmers came in a procession and laid siege to the GESCOM office. They also shouted at the GESCOM officials for not implementing the Government's decision to provide 16-hour power supply to rural areas. Mr. Veerbasantreddy, who had a heated argument with GESCOM officials, said that the farmers could not operate their irrigation pumpsets due to the irregular power supply. GESCOM officials said that 14-hour power supply was being provided to the rural areas and the situation would further improve after the installation of the 220 kV power station in Yadgir in 2005-06. The farmers demanded that GESCOM sanction 33 kV substations at Khanapur, Thangundi, Wadegera, and Bendegumbli, and ensure 14-hour power supplyto rural areas.
