National workshop on Cryptology begins

KOLLAM, SEPT. 10. The three-day fourth annual national workshop on Cryptology was inaugurated at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (deemed university), Amritapuri Campus in Kollam today. The workshop is being organised in association with the Cryptology Research Society of India (CRSI), the premier national body supporting and promoting research activities in cryptology, data security and related areas in the country.

N. Sitaram, Director, CAIR, was the chief guest on the occasion. The keynote address was delivered by Rear Admiral S. Balachandran, Director General, WESEE. P. Venkat Rangan, Vice- Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, delivered the presidential address.

Bimal Roy, Professor, ISI, Kolkata and T.R. Madhavan, CEO, Dhanalakshmi Bank spoke.

Self-reliance

Dr. Sitaram, in his address emphasised the need for self-reliance in this critical technology.

He mentioned the major potential for use of Cryptology in military applications.

However, he cautioned that Cryptology research was very challenging and substantial research effort was required to achieve leadership in this field.

He also expressed the need for production capability for crypto products in our country to harness its full potential.

Research infrastructure

In his keynote address, Rear Admiral S. Balachandran underscored the need to set up a strong infrastructure for Cryptology research in India. Cryptology applications could be put to effective use for enhancing defence capability significantly.

Lack of priority and attention given to Cryptic analysis hampered its growth in the country, he pointed out.

Over 100 delegates from premier academic and Government research institutions from all over the country are participating in the workshop.
