PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 10. A one-day meeting of the regional coordination committee of the Directors-General of Police of Southern States here today decided that fingerprint bureaux of the southern States should be interlinked. Such a facility would help speedy investigation and tracing of criminals, the Inspector-General of Police of Pondicherry, P.R. Meena, told presspersons after the meeting. The DGPs also decided that the bureaux should be updated for preparing photos of criminals based on the eyewitnesses' version. The Tamil Nadu police in consultation with the National Crime Records Bureau would work out the modalities to develop the software. The police chiefs also decided that there should be greater sharing of information relating to movements of gangs or organisations indulging in anti-national activities. A coordinated effort was needed to prevent trafficking in women and children. The meeting decided upon effective measures to ensure sustained patrolling of the coasts. Pondicherry would have a marine police station soon. Another would be set up in Karaikal. Mr. Meena said a meeting of the heads of CID wings of Southern States would be held in Thiruvananthapuram in the near future. The committee's next meeting would be held after six months in Bangalore. Earlier, inaugurating the meeting, the Pondicherry Lt. Governor, M.M. Lakhera, stressed the need for coordinated work by the police to prevent anti-national activities. Latest facilities such as e-mail and web sites should be used to share information, particularly to tackle cyber crime, which was ``alarmingly on the increase for some time now.'' The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, who addressed the closing session, said the territorial administration would give full support to modernising the police force. The DGPs, P.K.H. Tharakan (Kerala), I.K. Govind (Tamil Nadu) and S.N. Borkar (Karnataka), the Inspectors-General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, Ambati Sivanarayanan and D. Boopathy Babu, and other senior officials took part in the meeting.
